John K Burkley and his wife Calysta Feehly Burkley founded the John K Burkley Company in May 1949, operating out of the family home.

Over the years the business has been located in various locations in Elkton, including High Street and Main Street until the current location at 190 E. Main Street was built in 1967.

After the death of his father, William F. Burkley took over the business on July 7, 1952 . He was joined on July 8, 1985 by his son, John K. Burkley II, in the practice of Insurance and Real Estate.

Together William F. Burkley and John K. Burkley II developed the Upper Chesapeake Corporate Center, a 220 acre industrial park in Elkton, MD.

In addition to running the family business, the Burkleys have always been active in their community and state. The original Burkley family was established in the Cecil County area in the mid 1800’s. John Burkley served on the Democratic State Central Committee as well as on the Maryland Motion Picture Censor Board under the term of Governor William Preston Lane from 1948 to 1952.

William F. Burkley represented Cecil County for eight years as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1954 to 1962, and for twelve years as Chairman of the Maryland Transportation Commission from 1971 to 1983. He was an Eagle Scout and served on the Cecil County Economic Development commission, the Maryland Heart Association and was President of the Maryland Association of Insurance Agents. He was the First President of the Cecil County Board of Realtors and a Founder of Cecil Federal Savings Bank in 1959. He was a lifelong member of the NAACP and served as a member of the Governor’s Judicial Selection Committee from the second Judicial Circuit of Maryland. He was instrumental in the formation of the Elkton Alliance and instrumental in the revitalization program for Main Street in Elkton. The revitalization program was completed prior to his death October 12, 2001 and he took great pride in it.

John K. Burkley II has been Chairman of the Elkton Board of Zoning Appeals and the Cecil County Planning commission. He has served as President of the Cecil County YMCA, Treasurer of the Union Hospital of Cecil County, President of the Greater Elkton Chamber of Commerce and Commissioner of the Town of Elkton. He was appointed by Former Governor Parris Glendening to the board of the Maryland Economic Development Corporation. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, John is currently Chairman of the Democratic Central Committee of Cecil County. John also maintains membership in the National Association of Realtors, Maryland Association of Realtors, the Cecil County Board of Realtors and the Independent Insurance Agents.
